FAQ

Real answers. No fluff.

Everything new dancers (and parents) ask us — trials, pricing, ages, and how to get to the studio. Tap any question to expand.

🎟️Trials & first visit

How do free trials work at Brooklyn Basement Dance Co.?

Every new dancer gets one free trial class in hip hop or foundations — no payment required. Pick a class from our schedule, book the trial through your family portal, and show up 10 minutes early on the class day. After the trial you can register for the season at any time.

What should my child wear to their first dance class?

Comfortable athletic clothes they can move freely in — leggings, shorts, or sweatpants and a fitted t-shirt work great. Bring clean indoor sneakers (no street shoes on the floor) and a water bottle. Long hair should be tied back. No jewelry or gum.

What age can kids start dance classes?

We accept dancers starting at age 3 in our foundations program and up through teens in our leveled hip hop classes. Adults have their own dedicated drop-in and series classes. If you're not sure which class fits your dancer's age and experience, message us and we'll help you place them.

Can parents watch the class?

We don't have a dedicated viewing area — our studio space is focused on giving dancers room to move. Parents of toddlers (ages 3–5) are welcome to join the first class if needed, though we recommend letting them try independently first. For older dancers we suggest drop-off so they can fully focus.

What happens on the first day of class?

Arrive 10 minutes early, check in at the front, and meet your instructor. Classes start with a warm-up, then technique drills, choreography, and a cool-down — about 45–60 minutes total. New dancers don't need any prior experience; we group everyone by age and level.

💃Classes, ages & levels

What styles of dance do you teach?

Our core program is hip hop and foundations (the building blocks of street and commercial dance: rhythm, isolations, grooves, and choreography). We also offer adult drop-in classes and a summer camp with multiple styles. See the full schedule on our classes page.

What's the difference between hip hop and foundations?

Foundations is our intro program — kids learn basic grooves, rhythm, and bodyweight movement that prep them for any style. Hip hop adds choreography, freestyle, and culture from the styles that built it (breaking, popping, locking, house). Most dancers start in foundations and graduate into hip hop.

How do I pick the right level for my dancer?

Classes are grouped by age, with skill-based progression inside each age bracket. If your dancer is new to dance, start at the entry level for their age. If they have prior training, mention it when you book and our team will recommend a class. We can also re-level after the first month.

Do you have adult dance classes in Brooklyn?

Yes — we run weekly adult hip hop and choreography classes designed for total beginners through advanced movers. You can drop in for a single class or buy a class pack. No prior experience required and no commitment to a season. Full schedule on our adult classes page.

Do you offer summer dance camp for kids?

Yes. Brooklyn Basement Dance Co. runs week-long summer dance camps for kids and teens, with multiple styles, freestyle sessions, and a Friday showcase. Camps fill up fast — see our summer camp page for dates and registration.

What bus routes stop near the studio?

The B25 (Fulton Street) and B67 (Seventh Avenue / Park Slope to DUMBO) both stop within a few blocks. The B69 runs between DUMBO and Windsor Terrace. From any of these, the walk to 82 John Street is under 10 minutes.

Can I bike to the studio?

Is the studio easy to get to from Manhattan?

Very. We're one F train stop from East Broadway / Delancey, and the A/C from West 4th, Canal, or Fulton Street drops you at High Street — both stations are a short walk to the studio. From Midtown, the F is the most direct ride (about 20 minutes).

🛡️Instructors & studio safety

Who teaches at Brooklyn Basement Dance Co.?

Our faculty is a hand-picked roster of working Brooklyn and NYC choreographers, performers, and educators — most have been teaching kids and adults for 5+ years. Every instructor is vetted for craft and for how they hold a room. Meet the team on our about page.

Are your dance teachers background-checked?

Yes. Every instructor and staff member who works with minors passes a background check before stepping into the studio. We also require ongoing training in working with kids and teens, including basic first aid and a code of conduct every teacher signs.

What's the student-to-teacher ratio?

Mini and toddler classes are capped at 10 dancers with one teacher. Older kids' and teen classes are capped at 15 dancers with one teacher. If a class hits capacity we open a waitlist before adding more bodies to the room.

How do you keep dancers safe in class?

Sprung dance floors, clear sightlines from the lobby, a no-tolerance bullying policy, and instructors trained in safe warm-ups and age-appropriate technique. Only enrolled dancers and staff are allowed past the lobby during class hours.

Is the studio insured?

Yes — Brooklyn Basement Dance Co. carries full studio liability insurance, which is one of the things your annual registration fee covers. A signed waiver is required before any dancer's first class. Full details are on our policies page.

🎤Performances & showcases

Do dancers perform in a recital or showcase?

Yes — every season builds toward a real performance on a real stage. Showcases are one of the most meaningful parts of training here: dancers learn choreography, rehearse together for months, and finally get to share it with family, friends, and the wider community.

Is being in the showcase required?

For most season classes, yes — the showcase is the goal the whole season is pointed at, and being part of the group matters for the choreography and the dancer's experience. If your family can't commit, message us before enrolling and we'll talk through options.

How big of a time commitment is the performance season?

Enrolling in a season class means committing to weekly classes plus a few extra rehearsals as the showcase gets close (usually in the final 4–6 weeks). Performance week itself includes a tech rehearsal and the show — full dates are shared at enrollment so families can plan.

When are your showcases held?

Our main showcase happens at the end of the season, typically late spring or early summer, with smaller in-studio showings during the year. Exact dates and venue are announced to enrolled families well in advance and posted on our events calendar.

Can family and friends come watch the showcase?

Absolutely — that's the whole point. Showcases are open to family and friends, and tickets are made available to enrolled families first. Bring the grandparents, the cousins, the babysitter — the bigger the crowd, the better the dancers feel out there.

🎒Studio logistics — drop-off, phones & snacks

What's your drop-off and pickup process?

Check in at the front desk a few minutes before class — staff will walk younger dancers into the studio. At pickup, please be back at the lobby by class end; we don't release minors to anyone not on the family's approved pickup list without confirmation.

Can parents or siblings wait in the lobby?

Yes — our lobby has seating, water, and a viewing window. Siblings are welcome to wait with a parent or guardian. We just ask that the lobby stays calm enough for dancers heading in and out of class to focus.

Can my dancer bring a phone to class?

Phones are fine to bring but go in a cubby once class starts — no phones on the dance floor. This keeps dancers focused, keeps choreography off the internet before it's ready, and protects everyone's privacy. Parents can always reach the studio directly during class.

Can dancers bring snacks? Is the studio nut-free?

Bring a water bottle for sure. Snacks are best eaten before or after class, not in the studio. We do our best to keep nuts out of shared spaces — if your dancer has a serious allergy, tell us at registration so we can flag it for instructors.

What if I'm running late to class or pickup?

Late arrivals can still join — just check in at the front so the instructor knows. For pickup, message or call the studio if you're delayed; we'll keep your dancer with staff in the lobby. Repeated late pickups may incur a fee per our policies.

Still curious?
